Resident Good

The Verdict:
GO SEE!

REVIEW:
This continuation to 2007's Resident Evil: Extinction is more exciting, fun and back to creepy (unlike its 2007 predecessor Resident Evil: Extinction).
There are hundreds of zombies, tons of sneaky monsters and one huge seemingly unstoppable boss.
Fans of the video games should enjoy seeing Alice, and especially brother and sister Claire and Chris reunited. The cool post-credits scene assures fans an Evil 5 is coming.

What's Playing? 9/10 Weekend

***

There's an interesting mix of films opening this weekend:

-The horror/video gamed based film Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D
-A documentary, I'm Still Here starring Joaquin Phoenix
-The re-release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse somehow because of Bella Swan's birthday (September 13th by the way)
-And a dirty teen comedy, The Virginity Hit.

Nothing this weekend makes me want to run to theatres however.

Starting Friday in theatres is:

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D
What's It About?
Alice is back fighting zombies and monsters in the fourth installment of the Resident Evil series.

Why See It?
-If you're a fan of the Resident Evil video games or the previous Resident Evil films.
-For the 3D factor. Zombies in 3D should be pretty cool.

Why Skip It?
If the past Resident Evil movies didn't do enough justice to the video games for you.

*

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
What's It About?
The third installment in the Bella, Edward, Jacob or human, vampire, werewolf teen love triangle.

Why See It?
-You're a Twihard.
-You never got around to seeing it during summer.

Why Skip It?
You're not a Twihard (meaning: you're not in love with Twilight's books/films)

Trailer:

*

I'm Still Here
What's It About?
A documentary documenting Joaquin Phoenix's new and odd career path as a rap artist.

Why See It?
To be proven it's not a joke Joaquin Phoenix left film to rap.

Why Skip It?
Joaquin Phoenix's name doesn't ring a bell to you.

Trailer:
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810167068/video

*

The Virginity Hit

What's It About?
A nerdy teen boy attempts to have his virginity loss recorded.

Why See It?
If you're a fan of raunchy teen movies as such.

Why Skip It?
-The title alone turns you off.
-Because there's not even one known actor/actress you're familiar with.

Avatar Smavatar

The Verdict:
MAYBE SEE...

REVIEW:
You aren't missing much if you don't see the most hyped films of 2009. Sure the super tall, blue Avatars and the creatures in Pandora's world are pretty cool but that's where the coolness stops. The story has been told: one group of people want what another group of people have at all cost. The love aspect between Jake and Neytiri is sweet however but not surprising.
The trailer is more exciting than the actual movie. Twelve years after James Cameron's gorgeous, epic Titanic, Avatar is a letdown. Avatar is beautiful visually but that's where the praises stop.

Most beautiful women on TV

I admit, I watched a fair amount of TV over the past ten years. Here's some highlights from the hot chicks department.

10. Shana Hiatt

The highlight of every episode of the World Poker Tour, Shana Hiatt is cute, sexy and charming, making her by far the best hotel-named woman in America. Bonus points go to her parents for being able to come up with an actual first name instead of calling her Shanghai Hiatt or something. Seriously though, she's lovely, and I daresay she had a place in every poker watcher's affections while she was still on the WPT. The sheer disappointment of having her replaced by run-of-the-mill blondes was testament to her appeal.

9. Laura Prepon

I'll start with the bad news: she's a Scientologist. Learning that someone thinks Tom Cruise's scientology promo video and Battlefield: Earth are a perfectly reasonable expression of religious sentiment is enough to dampen anyone's sex appeal. For an antidote, check out one of the episodes of That 70's Show where she wears a Catholic school uniform. Even if she believes that Xenu is imprisoned under a volcano somewhere and that the Marcabian battlefleet is coming for us in space DC-9s, she's still hot.

8. Isabelle Mercier

O Canada, there's something good about you after all. On the face of it, it would be easy to totally dismiss this faux nation of North Americans even more pompous than their southern neighbors; after all, they're not even a real country. But then they come up with someone like the beautiful and undeniably talented Isabelle Mercier. She caught our eye on the WPT when she was still working at the Aviation Club de France, and when she started playing, we were fans from day 1.

7. Gail Kim

Another drop-dead-gorgeous pro wrestler, Gail Kim made a brief appearance in the WWE just before the demise of the women's division. She was an impressive athlete, and how can you argue with those looks?

6. Alyson Hannigan

Ah, the phenomenon that was Buffy. I remember liking the original movie back in the day, and while the TV show was fun at first, the repetitive nature of the episodes and Josh Whedon's "clever" writing got so boring that I didn't manage to keep watching past the first season. The strongest condemnation of Whedon that I can think of is that even Alyson Hannigan playing a lesbian witch wasn't enough to get me to watch the show. I mean, look at her.

5. Miley Cyrus

Oh boy, if you thought Emma Watson in my hot actresses list was wrong, you're gonna love this one. She'll be 18 in November of this year, though, and even before that, she's legal in Finland, so she still makes the list. One day, I decided we're going to watch an episode of Hannah Montana, just to find out what it's all about. Everyone who contributes to this blog may be old, but at least some of us try to keep up with what's going on. Surprisingly, it turns out Hannah Montana is a decent show, and Miley Cyrus is a cute, sympathetic lead. Maybe my strangest Hannah Montana experience was finding out that several of my fellow inmates in prison were fans of the show. The first time I saw her she was really just a cute little girl, but after seeing her on the Ellen Degeneres Show, of all things, almost wearing a very short skirt, it's harder to think of her as just a little girl. Nice legs, by the way.

4. Kari Byron

Everyone's favorite Mythbuster was a great reason to watch the show even after it got stale. No "myth" was too implausible nor any experiment too silly if she was on screen. Not only is she gorgeous, but she can do science and build things. How sexy is that? Luckily for all of us, she was also kind enough to pose for FHM.

3. Kara Dioguardi

I freely admit I had no idea who she was before she started judging on American Idol. Since then, though, she's been growing on me, until this season, when I have to fess up to having a horrible crush on her. Even some of her questionable dress choices, like the results show a few weeks back when she appeared as, seemingly, a Bajoran intelligence officer, can't shake the sheer pleasure I get from seeing her on TV. In addition to that, she's now embracing the spotlight, with a bikini shoot for Maxim and a nude pictorial (done tastefully, of course). If she keeps this up, I'll start hoping to see her in Playboy. Hef, give her a call!

2. Christy Hemme

If you've been following my series of "best of the 2000's" posts, you've already met the Hooters girl turned pro wrestler. She is simply fabulous, and each of her fairly rare appearances on TV was a highlight in itself.

1. Amy Dumas

The queen of pro wrestling has admittedly appeared in this blog quite a few times, but I'm not ashamed to say I consider her something of a pinnacle of womanhood. On the topic of this list, she made a brief foray into TV drama with an appearance on the final double episode of Dark Angel, where an inept stuntwoman broke her neck in the final fight scene. Thanks a million, dumbass. Unfortunately she seems to have pretty much dropped off the TV map since. I miss her!

Who's a skeptic?

Guardian: Bjørn Lomborg: $100bn a year needed to fight climate change
The world's most high-profile climate change sceptic is to declare that global warming is "undoubtedly one of the chief concerns facing the world today" and "a challenge humanity must confront", in an apparent U-turn that will give a huge boost to the embattled environmental lobby.

Bjørn Lomborg, the self-styled "sceptical environmentalist" once compared to Adolf Hitler by the UN's climate chief, is famous for attacking climate scientists, campaigners, the media and others for exaggerating the rate of global warming and its effects on humans, and the costly waste of policies to stop the problem.

But in a new book to be published next month, Lomborg will call for tens of billions of dollars a year to be invested in tackling climate change. "Investing $100bn annually would mean that we could essentially resolve the climate change problem by the end of this century," the book concludes.

Examining eight methods to reduce or stop global warming, Lomborg and his fellow economists recommend pouring money into researching and developing clean energy sources such as wind, wave, solar and nuclear power, and more work on climate engineering ideas such as "cloud whitening" to reflect the sun's heat back into the outer atmosphere.

Apparently Lomborg has joined a fairly exclusive club. Mainly that of people with famous books that no-one seems to have actually read.

The only way anyone can say Lomborg has "changed his mind" about global warming is if they've never read his book in the first place. Contrary to what is usually reported, The Skeptical Environmentalist does not deny either global warming in general or anthropogenic global warming. In the Skeptical Environmentalist, Lomborg argued that while global warming is a very real problem, we need to be careful about what measures we take to fight it, as some of the policies being advocated to reduce CO2 emissions would end up costing us much more than unchecked global warming.

Of course, saying that we need to apply rational cost-benefit analysis to global warming was treated as heresy. The head of the IPCC, Rajendra Pachauri, infamously compared Lomborg's views to Hitler's. He said, and I am not making this up:

What is the difference between Lomborg’s view of humanity and Hitler’s? You cannot treat people like cattle. You must respect the diversity of cultures on earth. Lomborg thinks of people like numbers. He thinks it would be cheaper just to evacuate people from the Maldives, rather than trying to prevent world sea levels from rising so that island groups like the Maldives or Tuvalu just disappear into the sea. But where’s the respect for people in that? People have a right to live and die in the place where their forefathers have lived and died. If you were to accept Lomborg’s way of thinking, then maybe what Hitler did was the right thing.

That's right, folks. Cost-benefit analysis is genocide.

As Lomborg himself says in the Guardian article:

Lomborg denies he has performed a volte face, pointing out that even in his first book he accepted the existence of man-made global warming. "The point I've always been making is it's not the end of the world," he told the Guardian. "That's why we should be measuring up to what everybody else says, which is we should be spending our money well."

The problem is that no-one has read the point he was making. The entire "environmentalist" movement had a knee-jerk reaction to Lomborg's book; all they saw was someone voicing the wrong opinion.

The level of journalism displayed by the Grauniad is just appalling. In the header, they refer to Lomborg as "the world's most high-profile climate change sceptic". He isn't a climate change skeptic at all, unless now "climate change skeptic" means anyone who doesn't agree with Al Gore.

I'm now going to do something that, apparently, the Guardian is incapable of: actually quote from Bjørn Lomborg's book, The Skeptical Environmentalist. Amazing, I know, but that's the kind of blog I run.

Summing up

Global warming has become the great environmental worry of our day. There is no doubt that mankind has influenced and is still increasing atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and that this will influence temperature.

There's your climate change denial. What kind of idiots do they hire to write their articles?

Although nothing seems right

If this wasn't on Time Magazine's website, I wouldn't believe it.

Time: The Government Can Use GPS to Track Your Moves
Government agents can sneak onto your property in the middle of the night, put a GPS device on the bottom of your car and keep track of everywhere you go. This doesn't violate your Fourth Amendment rights, because you do not have any reasonable expectation of privacy in your own driveway — and no reasonable expectation that the government isn't tracking your movements.

That is the bizarre — and scary — rule that now applies in California and eight other Western states. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, which covers this vast jurisdiction, recently decided the government can monitor you in this way virtually anytime it wants — with no need for a search warrant.

It is a dangerous decision — one that, as the dissenting judges warned, could turn America into the sort of totalitarian state imagined by George Orwell. It is particularly offensive because the judges added insult to injury with some shocking class bias: the little personal privacy that still exists, the court suggested, should belong mainly to the rich.

Read, and be amazed. As far as I know, this is no April Fools' joke. There's a bunch of other good privacy-themed articles on time.com as well.

Of course, the idea that where you drive in your car is in any way your business is increasingly becoming bankrupt in the West. With surprisingly little fuss, the UK has now installed a nationwide system of cameras that read number plates. You can read about it here.

The way Big Brother is sneaking up on us is frightening.
