Happy birthday Enni Rukajärvi!

Happy birthday to Enni Rukajärvi, from the village of Rukajärvi in Kuusamo.

She's a snowboard slopestyle world champion and Winter X Games gold medalist, which is awesome.

In memory of Richard Feynman

On this day in 1918, the great Richard Feynman was born. Because really explaining what he did and why it's so significant is a task I'm unequal to, here's some fairly random quotes instead.

Some people say, "How can you live without knowing?" I do not know what they mean. I always live without knowing. That is easy. How you get to know is what I want to know.

This next one is dangerous, by the way. I think you're only allowed to ignore the experts if you're going to go out there and duplicate their work, or even beter, do the work they haven't done. It would be hideously stupid, and deeply wrong, to use this quote to justify sitting in your armchair and maintaining that the aliens built the pyramids.

Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts.

On that topic, by the way:

It is not unscientific to make a guess, although many people who are not in science think it is. Some years ago I had a conversation with a layman about flying saucers — because I am scientific I know all about flying saucers! I said “I don’t think there are flying saucers”. So my antagonist said, “Is it impossible that there are flying saucers? Can you prove that it’s impossible?” “No”, I said, “I can’t prove it’s impossible. It’s just very unlikely”. At that he said, “You are very unscientific. If you can’t prove it impossible then how can you say that it’s unlikely?” But that is the way that is scientific. It is scientific only to say what is more likely and what less likely, and not to be proving all the time the possible and impossible. To define what I mean, I might have said to him, "Listen, I mean that from my knowledge of the world that I see around me, I think that it is much more likely that the reports of flying saucers are the results of the known irrational characteristics of terrestrial intelligence than of the unknown rational efforts of extra-terrestrial intelligence." It is just more likely. That is all.

What I'd like to say to the UFO guys is: yes, we skeptics are guessing. You're not doing even that. Or, to give a Feynman quote that pretty much sums up the whole ancient aliens-ufos-paranormality industry:

Anyway, I have to argue about flying saucers on the beach with people, you know. And I was interested in this: they keep arguing that it is possible. And that's true. It is possible. They do not appreciate that the problem is not to demonstrate whether it's possible or not but whether it's going on or not.

And now for something completely different:

There were certain things I didn't like, such as tipping. I thought we should be paid more, and not have to have any tips. But when I proposed that to the boss, I got nothing but laughter. She told everybody, "Richard doesn't want his tips, hee, hee, hee; he doesn't want his tips, ha, ha, ha." The world is full of this kind of dumb smart-alec who doesn't understand anything.

Hear, hear. And, finally, for those of us still struggling with the notion of economic freedom versus government planning:

The real question of government versus private enterprise is argued on too philosophical and abstract a basis. Theoretically, planning may be good. But nobody has ever figured out the cause of government stupidity—and until they do (and find the cure), all ideal plans will fall into quicksand.

Happy birthday Laura Lee!

So Freeones tells me today is the beautiful Laura Lee's birthday.

Freeones also tells me she's Swiss, so I feel properly patriotic posting this.

Happy birthday!

Ice hockey world championships preview 2012

Shit, I don't know. It's not like we'll be seeing them now that they're on pay-tv. No way am I paying for Viasat for the NHL and MTV3 MAX for F1 and a third provider for this.

Did I mention it's Susana Spears's birthday?

I still don't know why the sight of her hit me like a ton of bricks, but it still kinda does.

Happy birthday!

Happy birthday Ashley Judd!

Question: how cool is Ashley Judd? To start, here's what is apparently a gratuitous picture of her in a hockey jersey.

Seriously though, she was in Darmok, one of the greatest pieces of science fiction ever.

She also recently wrote a brilliant takedown of the way the media objectifies and demeans women. I love it when someone writes a well-articulated, thought-out and thought-provoking fuck you. Ms. Judd, we find you awesome. Happy birthday!

The hottest pro wrestler ever

Because today is her birthday, let's watch some matches from my favorite pro wrestler of all time, the stunning Amy Dumas, a.k.a. Lita. If you have a problem with pro wrestling, read my defence of it, coincidentally posted on this very day some four years ago. Here's the first match:

This next one is a particular treat, as it features two of the most beautiful women on TV from the previous decade, and let's face it, Molly Holly's pretty hot, too.

Check out the pop Lita gets in both of these matches. That isn't piped in or cooked up as an angle for this storyline, it's real. She was awesome, and being awesome is damn sexy.

It's only proper to finish with a main event, and this sure is one. Refereed by none other than the legendary Earl Hebner of Montréal fame, this is pro wrestling the way it was meant to be. Admittedly the ladies play second fiddle in this one, but it's just such an awesome match.

Say what you like about Triple H, but he sure can sell.

Watching these clips reminded me all over again of what a huge crush I had on Lita when she was still wrestling. And I'm not sure that past tense is warranted. Happy birthday Amy! Wrestling was never the same without you.

Happy birthday Natascha Ragosina!

A very happy birthday to the hottest female fighter in the world, Natalia Yurievna Ragozina!

For whatever reason, her name is usually anglicized as Ragosina, even though з is ISO-properly romanized as z.

One of her nicknames is "the Russian Tzarina". She's the best argument I've ever seen for us returning to the bosom of Mother Russia.

Happy birthday!

Happy birthday Anna Semenovich!

A very happy birthday to Anna Grigorievna Semenovich!

Back in the 1990's, she was a competitive ice dancer, winning the Finlandia Trophy twice and placing tenth in the 2000 world championships.

Since then, she's apparently set up as a sort of Russian answer to Christine Smith.

All I know is, she's beautiful. Happy birthday!

Happy birthday Iga Wyrwał!

I can't believe I haven't acknowledged the gorgeous Iga Wyrwał's birthday on this blog before.

I mean, I've only been somewhat obsessed about her since at least 2008. I'm sure you can see why.

Despite a slightly odd return to modeling since the birth of her child, she remains one of the hottest women of the past decade.

Happy birthday!

Miley Cyrus!

We here at this blog think that Miley Cyrus is hot, and since today is her birthday, I'm posting some pictures of her.

It's not just us, either: she was #89 in FHM's 100 Sexiest Women of 2011, and #64 in Maxim's. We, on the other hand, ranked her as the fifth-hottest woman on TV in the 2000s. We mean when she was over 18, obviously. Prudes.

Happy birthday Miley!

Happy birthday Aishwarya Rai!

We recently had the pleasure of seeing the beautiful Aishwara Rai in the Tamil science-fiction film Robot, which was brilliant. Today's her birthday!

Rai won the Miss World pageant back in 1994:

Representing, of course, India.

We liked her acting, and were pleasantly surprised that she does Fergie much, much better than Fergie.

And, above all, was simply beautiful.

If you get a chance to see Robot, do. It was awesome.

Happy birthday Jessica Michibata!

I can't believe we've neglected the devastatingly cute Jessica Michibata, a beautiful Japanese model and girlfriend of F1 world champ Jenson Alexander Lyons Button MBE.

It's her birthday today, so it seems like a good time to correct our mistake.

Happy birthday!

Jessica Drake and Bianca Beauchamp

Sorry if that got someone overly exited; as far as I know, these two beautiful ladies just happen to share a birthday.

The beautiful Jessica Drake is one of the hottest porn stars in the world:

Bianca Beauchamp, on the other hand, is the most beautiful fetish model ever.

Happy birthday!

Happy birthday Jayden Cole!

Another porn birthday: the beautiful Jayden Cole!

She's starred in a movie called Bikini Frankenstein, and if that's not enough of a character reference for you, then I don't know what is.

Happy birthday!
