The Disappearance of Alice Creed

The other night I was sitting at home, alone and bored, so I decided to watch a movie. I scanned through the OnDemand new movies and did not see anything jump out. I then checked the Now In Theaters section. I saw The Disappearance of Alice Creed, which sounded interesting.  The movie ended up being very good and I would definitely recommend checking it out, especially if you enjoy character driven British films.

The plot revolves around three characters (actually the only three people in the entire film).  Alice Creed is the daughter of some wealthy guy and she is kidnapped by Vic and Danny.  Then we see double crosses and it keeps you on your toes.  After the jump, I will get into some of the things I really liked which will have spoilers.

The first thing I want to say is that Gemma Arterton is very hot.  Not only that though, she was fantastic in this film.  She is mostly ball-gagged the entire film, yet that does not stop her from convincing us that she is terrified and in a real sense of danger.  Actually, after Danny reveals himself to her, he says that he had to keep the plan from her because Vic would have known if she was not really scared.  I almost feel like they must have just kidnapped Gemma for the beginning because she seemed genuinely scared.

Speaking of Danny, his was the first plot twist we see.  When he allows her to use the restroom (a bucket), she makes him turn his back and she manages to get his gun.  He pulls his mask off to reveal that he is her boyfriend.  This was one of those twists that I actually figured would need to be in a movie like this.

I did not see the second twist coming.  Danny and Vic are also lovers.  Vic is the man with the plan, but later we learn that Danny manipulated him into doing the entire thing.  When Vic learns that Alice knows their names, he takes Danny out and shoots him.  Only wounding him though.  It was actually kind of sad.  Vic really loved Danny.

The movie ends with a dying Vic giving Alice the keys to free herself.  She walks down the road and finds Danny dead in his car along with the money.  She pulls him out of the car and drives off, seemingly to disappear and keep her father's money (we learned that he had cut her off).

At the beginning of the movie, there is no talking for a good five minutes.  Danny and Vic spend the time sound-proofing the room and setting up the restraints.  They then kidnap Alice and strip her down (she has great breasts) and then they take the pictures and put her in the outfit you see above.  Later, Danny comes into the room and starts passing his hand above Alice (this is where I got the idea that they were together) and for a second you get the idea that he might rape her.  It was one of those scenes that has you on the edge of your seat.

I am glad it ended the way it did though because at first I kept thinking that we would learn that actually Alice and Vic somehow knew each other and they were planning on double crossing Danny the entire time.  If this would have happened it would have ruined the movie.  Keep it simple, but believable.
