Jekaluvi

NHL: Playoffs, round 2

The first round is behind us, and it's time to see how my picks worked out. Just for the hell of it, I'm going to compare myself with Adam Proteau of the Hockey News, who also made some playoff picks. I love Proteau's stuff on THN and have the greatest amount of respect for him as a hockey journalist and pundit. That's why I get a kick out of comparing my picks to his.

East:

Boston - Montréal
I said: Bruins in five.
What happened: Bruins in four.
Adam said: Bruins in five.
What can I say? The Habs were even worse than I thought.

Washington - New York
I said: Caps in six.
What happened: Caps in seven.
Adam said: Caps in seven. Nice one, Adam!

It's testament to the Rangers' unbelievably rubbish offense that they didn't win Game 7 of this series. After the lackluster way the Caps played the first two periods, the game should have been something like 5-1 after 40 minutes. But it wasn't, so I stand by my original prediction that the Rangers' horribly deficient offense led to their downfall.

New Jersey - Carolina
I said: Devils in six. Wrong!
What happened: Canes in seven.
Adam said: Devils in six. Wrong!

Wow. The Canes pulled off an incredible turnaround in the seventh game, with two goals in what, the last two minutes of the game? Amazing. I didn't think they had what it took, and New Jersey looked terrifyingly good at times during the season.

Pittsburgh - Philadelphia
I said: Pens in five.
What happened: Pens in six.
Adam said: Flyers in seven. Wrong!

The Flyers stick to form with a second ridiculous playoff failure against the Penguins. What is it with the Flyers and the Pens? Philadelphia was horrible in this series. Their defense was rubbish, but above all their offensive play was just horrible. They had more turnovers than completed passes in most games. How can they be a consistently terrible playoff team two years in a row against the very same franchise?

Overall I got the winning team right three out of four times, only failing with the Canes. That's one better than Proteau! Go me.

**

West:

San Jose - Anaheim
I said: Sharks in six.
What happened: Ducks in six.
Adam said: Sharks in six.

I figure me and Adam both expected the Sharks to finally get over their playoff troubles. Despite some great stepping up by Joe Thornton and captain Patrick Marleau, we were wrong.

Detroit - Columbus
I said: Jackets in seven.
What happened: Wings in four. Wrong!
Adam said: Wings in seven.

I admit I was far too optimistic. I'd like to echo what THN's Rory Boylen said about the Jackets: you'd think that after waiting this long to make the playoffs, they'd at least have been prepared. It got pretty ugly at times. Still, my bad for stupidly picking a first-time playoff franchise to win a series.

Canucks - Blues
I said: Canucks in six.
What happened: Canucks in four. Right result, wrong number of games.
Adam said: Blues in seven.

Chicago - Calgary
I said: Chicago in six.
What happened: Chicago in six. Hooray!
Adam said: Flames in six.

For obvious scheduling reasons, I see way more Eastern Conference games than Western, and that shows here. I only got two right; then again, Adam only got one right. Go me!

Overall, by winning team, I was 5/8; slightly better than random!

**

The conference semi-finals start this weekend, so let's get in some picks!

East:

Boston - Carolina
This is the first real test for the Bruins. Do they have what it takes? I think they do, but the Hurricanes will put up a real fight. Either team can win this.
Bruins in six.

Washington - Pittsburgh
I think just about everyone who watches hockey has been looking forward to this series. The way I see it, Washington has a clear advantage in goaltending and defense, and that should swing the series in their favor. The referees are going to blatantly favor Pittsburgh again, like they did in the Flyers series earlier; in the deciding game, I counted six blatant fouls on Flyers players with the puck in the Pittsburgh zone during the last period alone. None were called. It's going to be a tough series and an unfair series.
For the Caps, the question is which team shows up. If the Caps from Game Six of the first round show up, they'll win in five games. If the Caps from Game Seven show up, they'll be swept.
Caps in seven.

West:

Detroit - Anaheim
This is a tough series. Just because of Teemu, I want to believe in Anaheim, but I don't see it working out for them. This will be an epic series, though.
Wings in seven.

Vancouver - Chicago
The Blackhawks already got in some good practice in smashing a Northwest division trap team, and that should come in handy here.
Hawks in six.

**

I freely admit that my picks in the West are slightly influenced by my desire to see a Chicago-Detroit conference final. It would be epic. My belief is that ultimately the Cup will stay in the West, if only because if the Eastern final ends up being Bruins - Caps, there won't be a single intact player left in the Eastern champs' roster.

A couple of teams will face some big questions after their elimination from the first round, none more so than San Jose. I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with the team; they're a young organization, and their most important players don't have that much playoff experience. One way of looking at this season is to say that they continue to fail miserably in the post-season; another is to say that they're looking an awful lot like Detroit around the lockout. And that isn't necessarily bad.

The situation in Calgary is more dire. They've only got past the first round of the playoffs once since 1989, when they last won the Cup. I believe one of the biggest reasons is that Kiprusoff plays far too much in the regular season, but over the last season or so Mike Keenan has turned the team's defense into a shambles. A big reason Kiprusoff's stats are down, at least judging from the games I've seen, is the ineptitude of the defense in front of him. I don't believe Calgary is anywhere near good enough to make a deep playoff run.

In the east, I firmly believe the Rangers have to get rid of GM Glen Sather. I agree completely with what Adam Proteau said in his post on the topic: "the Rangers, yet again, have been constructed by GM-from-an-undisclosed-location Glen Sather to be just good enough to make the playoffs and just bad enough to enjoy minimal success in those playoffs." The whole roster is founded on misplaced hopes that players like Scott Gomez and Chris Drury will suddenly become top-line players who can lead a team to playoff victory. Well, they didn't. Once again, a slow, old team in front of Henrik Lundqvist just isn't enough for success. If they stick with Sather, it's going to raise the question: are the Rangers even trying to do better?

I'll finish off with the most amazing fact of the first round of the playoffs. In Game 7 in the Caps-Rangers series, the best skater on the ice, by far, from both teams, was Sean Avery.

You figure this guy out.

I've paid for fifteen or more, but my guts can't take many more

  • Jessica Alba cute face
  • vida guerra ass
Övrigt material fanns i mina mottagna filer!

Därmed försvann min magnifika topplista i GNUjump.
Helvete!

hälsar,
Abducted Alien

IHWC: Finland, France and others

Finland's first big game at the ice hockey world championships in Switzerland is today, against the Czech Republic. Just before the tournament, Finland lost to the Czechs in overtime in the last tournament of the Euro Hockey Tour. The game tonight could go either way; a big question mark for Finland is their offensive play, and the big question for the Czechs is goaltending and team defense. I'm tempted to think Finland will win it, but I don't know.

It's a big game, though. Finland and the Czechs will both go on to the next round, where they'll play Canada, Slovakia and Belarus. My prediction is that Finland will lose to Canada but beat both Slovakia and Belarus, and therefore the Czech game will determine whether Finland is second or third in block E. I don't think Finland has what it takes to get past Roloson, and the Finnish defence is going to look pathetic against Canada.

E2 will play F3, and E3 F2 in the quarter-finals. It's looking like that will be either the US or Sweden, and looking at their play in the initial rounds I actually believe Team Finland will beat whichever one it faces. Therefore it's looking like my initial prediction that Finland will be out in the quarter-finals won't hold up, and I believe they'll make the semifinals.

In the semi-finals, however, Finland will likely play either Canada or Russia, neither of which they can beat. I'm predicting a Canada-Russia final and Finland facing the Czechs for the bronze medal, unless Sweden or the US step up their game big time. As usual, the bronze will go to whichever team actually wants it. That's probably Finland, but I don't know. Anyway, looks like another medal for Finland, but I seriously doubt Team Finland can actually challenge either Canada or Russia for a berth in the final.

**

It's been a great tournament for the smaller countries. Hungary nearly got into overtime with Slovakia, and in fact would have if not for the refs, Belarus did beat them, and Germany put up a heck of a fight against Switzerland. Denmark played a great offensive game against Finland, and if they can fix up their team defense and goaltending, they'll actually be a force to be reckoned with. Of the "medium" countries, Switzerland put up a creditable fight against Russia.

Russian defenseman Denis Grebeshkov chivalrously said some nice things about France to iihf.com:
"France has a pretty good team, but they're still not quite at the top level. For us, the game was good preparation for the next game. France is going to be a good team in a few years," Denis Grebeshkov said.

He's right, too; France has played exceptionally well both this year and last year. They very nearly made it into overtime with Switzerland after a heck of a game, and yesterday scored the biggest upset of the tournament so far by sending Germany to the relegation round. Vive la France!

Overall the level of hockey in Europe has clearly gone up. Once again, there are going to be some really tough games in the relegation round. I actually expect Hungary to do well and retain their spot in the world championships, but there's going to be a hell of a fight for the second spot. Germany are odds-on favorites, but they managed to lose a relegation round not too many years ago where they were even bigger favorites.

It's a real shame that Norway and Austria are the most likely candidates for relegation, but there's a real logjam of countries trying to fit into the world champs now. And that, along with the Champions' Hockey League, means that we're living in excellent times for European hockey.

**

I'd also like to make a couple of longer-term predictions. Slovakia is in the middle of its second nearly farcically bad tournament in a row. I can't help but think they're on their way out as a top 8 country. When Germany gets their act together, it's not impossible that Slovakia will lose their spot in the top 8 to the Germans.

Switzerland looks like they're on their way up, but I firmly believe the time has come for Krueger to go. A Swiss team won the Champions' League and they're doing very well in their home tournament. They could do even better, but not as long as Krüger has them playing a neutral zone trap. The Swiss game is far too passive. You can't win a hockey game by defending, as the Minnesota Wild continue to prove in the NHL, and the Swiss are going to need to up their game if they want to start challenging for the top spots in international hockey. They have it in them to do it, but Ralph Krueger does not. In my opinion, they need a coach with a more well-rounded game.

**

Overall, I think this is a great tournament. The big games are just starting up!

Book review: McMafia

Misha Glenny's book McMafia has such a hideously stupid cover that it put me off buying it for an entire year despite my great interest in its topic. I mean, come on:

What the hell is that, a Chinese GTA ripoff? It's awful.

What makes the cover art even more terrible is that the GQ quote on the cover isn't that far off. Glenny's written a wonderfully informative, perceptive book on global organized crime that I think really is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how the world works.

The only unfortunate aspect of the book is that sometimes Glenny starts propounding solutions. Occasionally these are obvious ones; he agrees with such hideous left-wing anarchists as the Economist magazine that drugs should be legalized, and his book is an excellent argument in favor of legalization.

On the other hand, though, because he's mainly concerned with organized crime, this leads him to take rather a strange perspective on some things. For example, he details the anarchy that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the criminal gangs, mafias and oligarchs that took control in Russia. Because he sees all of these as inherently negative, in Glenny's book Vladimir Putin assumes a heroic status as a champion of law and order! To anyone in the least bit familiar with Russia's burgeoning securocracy this is at the very least amusing, but really closer to frightening.

Sometimes Glenny calls for wider international measures to control something or the other, and several reviews of his book, like the one linked to on the Wikipedia page at salon.com, make the explicit comparison that international affairs must be regulated by a supranational entity just like the markets must be regulated. This is all so much left-wing claptrap, but luckily it very rarely distracts from the point of the book, which is to take the reader on a guided tour of the world of organized crime.

Mmm. Or-ganized crime.

**

Definitely a book worth reading, despite some of its biases. This should be essential reading to anyone who wants to talk about drugs, prostitution, human trafficking or terrorism.

Jaha, tänker man då.

Något gott medan man väntar

AA: Haha
RR: The Duke of Ghor seized the position as chairman
AA: Åh nej
RR: And so... the remnants meant to help people, ended up working against them!
RR: Jag begriper inget
AA: Det är inte meningen
RR: Duke of Ghor? Chairman?

Vem vet?

To be someone must be a wonderful thiiiiing

Hans hjärta är varmt och rött;
pulserar när han ser något sött.
Han såg en noddande brunett,
och hjärtat klappade lite mindre lätt,
men hans ivriga fallus,
den steg likt en uppstånden Jesus.

Ut i skogen för att söka,
men det blev intet göka.
Besvikelsen stack i hans själ,
ty han ville ju henne väl,
så det var bara att återvända,
ty alla hans broar var brända.
Men nog duger väl hans altan,

Some constants at the ice hockey world champs

Last year I pointed out that the "big" and "small" hockey countries get treated very differently at the ice hockey world champs. I postulated the following rule:
The refs will be twice as likely to call a penalty on a foul if the foul is committed by a player on a team whose IIHF World Ranking is lower than their opponent's.

Based on yesterday's games, this is still true. The Finnish referees in the Belarus-Canada game gave us some particularly shocking examples yesterday.

I don't intend to suggest Belarus had a particularly realistic chance of beating Canada, but the game was deadlocked at 0-2 for a long time. During that time, the Belarus team was constantly playing uphill. The Finnish refs would call three Belarus penalties for every single Canadian penalty, no matter what actually happened on the ice.

By far the most shocking instance was when Mike Fisher took a run at a Belarus player and checked him squarely in the head. The Belarus player was hurt and seemed to be bleeding from his cheek on the bench afterward.

Let's look at the IIHF rulebook.

540 – CHECKING TO THE HEAD AND NECK AREA.
a) A player who directs a check or blow, with any part of his body, to the head and neck area of an opposing player or ”drives” or ”forces” the head of an opposing player into the protective glass on boards, shall be assessed, at the discretion of the Referee, a:
➤ Minor penalty + Automatic Misconduct penalty (2’+10’)
or
➤ Major penalty + Automatic Game Misconduct penalty (5’+GM)
or
➤ Match Penalty (MP)
b) A player who injures an opponent as a result of checking to the head and neck area shall be assessed a
➤ Match Penalty (MP)

Fisher should have been assessed a match penalty. It's as simple as that. Of course, neither Finnish referee called one.

Later that night, Slovakia played Hungary and Switzerland faced France. Switzerland led 1-0 in the second, and the French equalizer was called back because a French forward was deemed to be interfering with the goaltender by, well, standing in front of him. At the same time, Slovakia went ahead 2-1 on a goal where Michal Handzus ran the Hungarian goaltender over and Lubos Bartecko scored on the empty net.

It absolutely defies belief that Handzus running over the Hungarian goalie wasn't goaltender interference, but a French forward standing in front of Gerber was. Again, let's look at the rulebook:

471 - DISALLOWING A GOAL
a) No goal shall be allowed:

6. If an attacking player initiates contact with the goalkeeper, incidental or otherwise, while the goalkeeper is in his goal crease and a goal is scored.
7. If an attacking player initiates any contact with the goalkeeper, other than incidental contact, while goalkeeper is outside his goal crease and a goal is scored.
8. Where an attacking player enters or takes a position within the goal crease, so as to obstruct the goalkeeper's vision and impair his ability to defend his goal net and a goal is scored.

There is absolutely no question that by the rules, Bartecko's goal should never have been allowed. In the Switzerland-France game, this rule was interpreted so strictly that a goal that would even have been allowed in the NHL if it was Tomas Holmström standing in front of the goaltender was disallowed. But in the Slovakia-Hungary game they allowed a goal after Handzus bowled over the Hungarian goaltender and was lying on top of him when Bartecko scored.

Hungary ended up losing by a single goal. It's hard to overrate how important the Slovak tiebreaker was.

**

The fact that this happens from year to year is simply shocking to me. The skill difference between countries like Canada and Belarus is big enough as it is; why do the referees think they need to make the playing field even more uneven?

Bear my rule in mind when watching big and small countries meet up at this year's champs. You'll find it's still true more often than not.

If the small countries got equal treatment at the world champs, we'd have a more exciting tournament and better hockey. At times, the way the tournament is called now is nothing short of disgusting. Letting major penalties go uncalled and permitting goals like Bartecko's is making a mockery of the sport.

I'd rather be no one than someone with no one

- No one to love

I'M JUSS LOKKEEAIII, TO SEE WATH I'M MISS-EEEN

The Pirate Bay trial gets worse

The ongoing Pirate Bay case is, to put it simply, astonishing. In latest news, it turns out the presiding judge is a member of Sweden's biggest pro-copyright associations.

The Guardian:
The judge who presided over the recent Pirate Bay trial has denied he had a "conflict of interest", after a Swedish radio station revealed he is a member of the country's main copyright association.

Sveriges Radio, described as Sweden's answer to the BBC, said that judge Norström is not only a member of the Swedish Copyright Association but also sits on the board of the Swedish Association for the Protection of Industrial Property, an organisation that lobbies for tougher copyright laws. The four co-founders of Pirate Bay were found guilty last week of charges relating to copyright infringement.

Judge Norström today denied his involvement with the two pro-copyright organisations constituted a "conflict of interest" in his ability to preside over the most high-profile trial involving illegal filesharing in European history.

My sincere, heartfelt thanks to the Guardian for that beautiful last sentence.

The way this case has been prosecuted absolutely defies belief. In my uncharitable moments, I'm tempted to say that the Swedish justice system is totally corrupt. Of course, ours is no better.

By and large, the Nordic countries are believed to be, and believe themselves to be, almost incorruptible. This is mostly because we stick to a ridiculously narrow definition of corruption. Finns and Swedes imagine their justice systems are incorruptible because traffic cops won't accept cash bribes. The real corruption here is systemic, and the Pirate Bay trial is proving it to anyone who can be bothered to look.

Remember that previously it turned out that the police officer in charge of the investigation, as well as the investigation into crimes against the Pirate Bay, was given a 6-month consulting job by Warner Brothers immediately after the investigation was over. I don't know how that's any different from accepting a cash bribe.

It's difficult to judge the historical impact of events as they're unfolding. However, I think it's fair to say that a trial like this can hardly increase the legitimacy of the state and the judiciary. What is the new effect on an entire generation of watching their peers sentenced for something they're all doing, something none of them consider illegal, and then of seeing that the organization that delivered the verdict is totally corrupt?

It's increasingly looking like the War on Drugs and War on Terror are going to be joined by the equally impossible War on Piracy. The losers in this war are all of us who see our human rights curtailed, our public institutions corrupted and the legitimacy of our polities eroded.

In my opinion, the whole Pirate Bay case is as clear a demonstration as anyone could wish for that even in 21st century Europe, money trumps justice every time.

The fight to save the world begins

Zombie Adams

Martin Whitmarsh and Liegate

McLaren's head jefe Martin Whitmarsh has spoken on the Liegate scandal. This is what he had to say to the Mirror:
The reality is that there is an agenda here: some people are out to get us.

Can I just remind everyone that this is the scandal where McLaren were caught brazenly lying to the Australian GP stewards to get Lewis Hamilton one additional championship point? And this is what he has to say?

I quote him to reinforce the point I made in my previous post. The entire organization is either delusional or totally corrupt. If a normal person committed a crime and then reacted by claiming there's a conspiracy out to get him, they wouldn't be classed as normal much longer.

I wonder if Mercedes will get tired of all this rubbish, especially with Brawn looking like a more eligible and less dishonest British affiliate.

Doin' rails off of a pair of fake tits

Diffusors, diffusors, diffusors

As expected, and as I predicted, diffusors are legal. Now we can finally get on with the F1 season.

Also, Ferrari moved their chief tactician to other tasks inside the organization, or whatever is the polite way of saying he's out. It's the right decision, and should go a long way toward fixing their problems. For my money, without the incredible tactical cockups of the last two GPs, Ferrari would have at least some points in the season. The way it looks now, winning either title is out of their grasp, but at least they can finish respectably, hopefully ahead of, say, BMW. Or at least ahead of McLaren.

Speaking of McLaren, whew. In my opinion, "liegate" is just the latest manifestation of a corrupt organization. It should have been clear to everyone two seasons ago with "Spygate" that McLaren, as an organization, is hopelessly dishonest and corrupt. Ron Dennis leaving didn't change the fundamental atmosphere of dishonesty in the team. The fact that Dave Ryan can go to the race stewards and blatantly lie to them, and even co-opt the driver involved, when both of them know perfectly well that they're lying, speaks to the moral fibre of the organization. The fact that their superiors then try to cover it up just tells us that the rot goes all the way to the top.

In my opinion, barring McLaren from F1 would do the sport a world of good. Drastic measures are needed before they change the way they operate, and clearly the disqualification from the manufacturers' series and the honking fine for Spygate weren't nearly enough to make them change their ways. The whole team is rotten.

**

The most bizarre commentary on the whole affair was given by Adrian Sutil, for a Dutch racing magazine. Here's what he had to say, courtesy of forumula1.net:
Adrian Sutil has spoken out in defence of Lewis Hamilton, saying that the punishments he receives could be a manifestation of racism. The Force India driver wrote in his weekly column for a Dutch magazine that he was mystified by the number of penalties the world champion appears to get.

“I have no idea how he (Hamilton) has got so many punishments. Slowly you start to ask yourself why it always happens to him. Is it his skin colour?” reads the article, in the Dutch magazine ”Formula 1 Race Report”.

Given that everyone knows what happened at the Australian GP, it is unbelievably disgusting that Sutil would try to play the race card. In my opinion, it shows a total disconnect from reality to claim that Hamilton has been penalized too much. On the contrary, especially in his first season, Hamilton got away with breaking the rules constantly.

So, it turns out that Adrian Sutil is an idiot. We learned something today!

The NHL playoffs

Okay, first the draft lottery. The Isles won, with Tampa coming in second. Unless someone in either team's management goes mad, that will mean the Islanders drafting John Tavares and the Lightning getting Victor Hedman.

This was the best order for both teams; I actually believe that had Tampa won the right to draft first, they should have drafted Hedman. Tampa desperately needs a reliable franchise defenseman, and they should get that in Hedman. The Islanders, in the bottom of the league in attendance numbers for years and in the middle of a local politics conflict over the building of their new arena, get a star forward to attract fans to the games, and a dynamic young player who should fit right into the Islanders' youth movement.

**

Now, the playoffs! Predictions:

East:

Boston - Montréal
As much as I want the Habs to win in their centennial year, I don't believe it for a second. The Bruins in five.

Washington - New York
The Rangers play a fairly solid game, but I doubt they can stop the hungry Capitals. The Caps' goaltending is a question mark, but the Rangers' scoring is a bigger one. Caps in six.

New Jersey - Carolina
A rested Brodeur in the playoffs, playing behind a Devils team that showed incredible offensive skills, for a New Jersey team? They might even win the Cup. Devils in six.

Pittsburgh - Philadelphia
On paper, the Flyers should have everything it takes to beat the Penguins: good defensive forwards, a balanced attack, a tough, physical team. (The Flyers' goaltending has been highlighted as their big problem, and sure, Biron hasn't been what he should be, but I still maintain that the actual problem isn't the goaltending, it's the defense, especially the defensemen. The Flyers need a defensive leader and they need one fast. Anyone from Finland should know that a team that looks to Kimmo Timonen to anchor its defense is in trouble) For some reason, though, the Flyers can't seem to do it. I desperately want the Flyers to destroy the Penguins in the playoffs like they should, but I sadly expect the Flyers to humiliatingly choke like they did last year.
Pens in five.

The great mystery of the East is how the Bruins will do. Will they be as dominant in the playoffs as they were in the regular season, or will they go bust? They might win the conference, they might lose to the Habs in the first round. If the Bruins advance, they'll most likely play the winner of the Flyers-Pens series, as I expect both New Jersey and Washington to win their series. That conference semi-final will be the toughest test for the Bruins in these playoffs; if they win it, they may well win the Cup, or at least make a strong bid for it in the final.

My prediction is a Boston-New Jersey conference final, with Boston advancing.

**

West:

San Jose - Anaheim
This is a great series for the Sharks to find out where they are. Anaheim traded away some veterans at the deadline, but the core of the team that won the Cup is still there. San Jose, on the other hand, has never gotten anywhere in the playoffs. The Ducks are an excellent test for them. If they pass, they'll go far. I think they will, but I'd be reluctant to put money on it. This should be a great, physical series, also with great skill when Teemu Selänne meets Joe Thornton. Sharks in six.

Detroit - Columbus
The battle of the goaltenders. Chris Osgood has been dismally bad this season, while Steve Mason has been nothing short of amazing. If it stays that way in the playoffs, the Wings will have a hard time. Columbus has been surprisingly good in the deadlocked West, and they should be hungry. I expect a great series, and again, I don't know which way this is going to go. Just because of the Stanley Cup hangover and the dubious goaltending, I want to believe that the Jackets will take it in seven.

Canucks - Blues
The most interesting series in the West by far, and the toughest one to call. In the Luongo Era, the Canucks have been solid defensively and rubbish at scoring; a classic trap team. Basically, if the Blues can contain the Canucks' fairly thin offense and crack the trap, they might score the upset. The Canucks are the favorites to win this by a long shot, so I have to say Canucks in six.

Chicago - Calgary
This one ought to be good too. The Chicago youth movement versus Mike Keenan. Keenan's Flames have been impossible to predict; at times brilliant and bristling with offense, at times incredibly bad. Looking at some of the games, it feels like Keenan's been working hard to destroy the Flames' defensive game. Kiprusoff is the key to their success, but I agree with Don Cherry on this one: he's played far too much in the regular season and will be tired. This series, too, could go either way, but I say Chicago in six.

Here it's really tough to say who will end up in the conference final. I feel like I should say San Jose - Detroit, but I'm not so sure about Detroit. San Jose I expect will make it, if they can weather the Ducks.

A San Jose - Boston final would be worth seeing.

**

Olli Jokinen will play in his first playoff game ever this week, ending the NHL's longest streak of regular-season games without a single playoff appearance. He deserves it, and I'm happy he's finally getting there.

It ought to be a fun playoffs. I can't wait!

Utomjordiskt gitarrspel

Left 4 Dead i GAMEs internetbutik: 199 kronor. Left 4 Dead i deras fysiska butik: 449 kronor.

90/100 i Storbritanniens Nintendomagasin. Inte konstigt att det suger.

An optimum population

BBC: Attenborough warns on population
The broadcaster Sir David Attenborough has become a patron of a group seeking to cut the growth in human population.

On joining the Optimum Population Trust, Sir David said growth in human numbers was "frightening".

Sir David has been increasingly vocal about the need to reduce the number of people on Earth to protect wildlife.

And so David Attenborough joins the most frightening lunatic fringe of the environmental movement: the "population control" nutcases.

There's another article on the BBC website, titled "Population: The elephant in the room", in which the writer makes the case for population control:

It's no far fetched possibility. Increasingly, environmental scientists insist we have overshot the Earth's carrying capacity.

I believe they are right; the proof is everywhere. Our inability to live as we do, at our current numbers, without causing pervasive environmental degradation is the very definition of carrying capacity overshoot.

This is pure garbage, and it's sinister garbage at that.

I should write on this at greater length, but I can't be bothered to right now. Suffice to say that despite the catchy name of the looney bin Attenborough has joined, there is no such thing as an optimum human population. Any balance struck between "people" and "wildlife" is an arbitrary, political one. There is no optimum. Demands for population control can't, logically, be demands for optimums or deep ecology-like "species equality", they're always arbitrary.

Basically, therefore, population control entails restricting the right of people to have children in the name of a political goal. Here's a fun quote from the other article I mentioned:

Some activists insist acting to influence population growth infringes on human rights; they maintain that it is best to leave the problem alone.

Let's dispense with this confused notion right now.

Yes, there have been past abuses in the name of "population control".

There have been abuses of health care and education too, but the idea of reacting by abandoning any of these causes is absurd.

Yes, because using government power to stop people from reproducing is exactly like health care and education.

Any talk of population control is, by definition, talk about human rights, in this case restricting them. This is one of the issues in which human rights and environmentalism clash dramatically.

In deep ecology, for instance, the priorities are clear:

The flourishing of human life and cultures is compatible with a substantial decrease of the human population. The flourishing of nonhuman life requires such a decrease.

Here "flourishing" is an arbitrary term, but the message is clear. Nonhuman life must be allowed to "flourish", therefore human life must be reduced.

Deep ecology claims to advocate "equal rights" for all living things. That's a funny definition of equal rights when one form of life must be systematically displaced in favor of others.

**

I personally maintain that deep ecology and all other movements are misanthropic, inhuman and against all concepts of human rights as we hold them. They appeal to some innate cruelty in people that makes them seek solutions in hecatombs, not in policy. It's no coincidence that the Jokela school shooter in Finland was a student of Pentti Linkola, a deep ecologist: he was a misanthope, and so was Linkola. Under Linkola's philosophy, the Jokela school shooting was a good thing as people died.

Population itself does not correlate with ecological damage. It's what the population does that causes damage. The article I quoted mentions, among other things, desertification in Africa as a result of overpopulation. Now this is just stupid. Desertification in Africa is caused by deforestation, largely a result of slash-and-burn farming but overall of using trees for firewood.

If your solution to this problem is "less people", then those fewer people will keep practising slash-and-burn agriculture and cutting down trees for firewood, and the problem will continue. On the other hand, a smarter way to fix the problem would be introducing modern agriculture and nuclear power. Then the trees don't need to be cut down any more.

Of course, this would mean advocating technology. As a rule, modern-day environmentalists prefer ludditism and hecatombs to technology. I believe most "deep ecologists" get such a kick out of being extreme and advocating insane solutions that they'd be deeply unwilling to make a sensible environmental case for, say, solving the desertification problem in Africa. Instead, they prefer the kind of sweeping proclamations like "we must reduce population" that have no basis in reality and can't be translated into policy. In my opinion, that isn't environmentalism.

**

No call for reducing the human population is anything but misanthropy, very much by definition. The whole idea is founded on the mistaken belief that the world is approaching or even, to some lunatics, exceeding, its carrying capacity. It's doing no such thing. This planet could easily house billions more humans.

We're extremely unlikely to ever even approach the limits of our carrying capacity. If there's one thing we've seen, it's that once societies reach a certain level of sophistication population growth simply ends. None of the developed nations of the world are growing at very high rates.

If you really want to stop population growth, start working toward bringing the Third World up to our level of affluence. That will effectively reduce human population growth across the planet to marginal levels.

Then again, that would mean advocating technology. And for the environmentalist movement, technology is evil. So I guess not.

RR: Will he score?
AA: Will He Score the Whore?
AA: Or Is She A Boar?
RR: And can she open the door?
AA: Lay topless on the floor,
AA: or will she be sore?
RR: When she's done her chore
AA: and closed her store

Koreanerna skriker konstiga ord,
